Volière

Volière is a prototype milk steamer and frother that is powered using only steam. The form resembles a bird cage, with two small birds chasing each other inside. These birds are not just for decoration, however; they also function as thrusters that power a simple steam turbine, a mechanism that draws inspiration from an ancient Greek invention known as the aeolipile. Similar to a moka pot, this device forgoes electricity, using instead the heat from your stove and water from your sink. Water is poured into the bottom stainless steel compartment, and the borosilicate glass pitcher is screwed on top. The pitcher is filled with milk, and once the stainless steel lid is placed on top, you simply turn your stove on to boil the water. Steam rises through the bottom compartment into the turbine, causing the birds to spin, frothing and steaming the milk at the same time. When the task has been completed, the excess steam is released from reed holes in the lid, whistling like a bird to tell you that it’s ready.
